XMind to Markdown: fully in-browser, one click into the mind map workspace

Last updated:

An .xmind file is a ZIP containing an XML or JSON topic tree. This tool converts it entirely inside your browser — the file never leaves your machine. Download the result as .md or load it straight into the mind map workspace.

Step 1: convert locally

Open XMind to Markdown and pick a .xmind file (up to 20 MiB). Both XMind 8 (XML) and newer Zen (JSON) formats work. Files with multiple sheets can be switched with the sheet dropdown.

  1. Open Toolbox → XMind to Markdown
  2. Choose the .xmind file and wait for local parsing
  3. For multi-sheet files, switch to the sheet you need
  4. Preview the Markdown and check the hierarchy

Step 2: understand the level mapping

The central topic becomes the # heading, main branches become ##, level three becomes ###, and level four or deeper become - list items — this is the tool’s current mapping rule.

Step 3: load into the workspace or export

Click Open in mind map workspace to load the result into the editor (up to 30,000 characters), where AI can expand or simplify it and you can export SVG/PNG — or click Download .md to keep the file.

Example input

(XMind topic tree)
Central topic: Project retrospective
├─ Goals
│ ├─ Planned
│ └─ Achieved
└─ Lessons
   ├─ What worked
   └─ What to improve

Example output

# Project retrospective
## Goals
### Planned
### Achieved
## Lessons
### What worked
### What to improve

About this example: Illustrative mapping; level 4 and deeper become - list items.

Limitations

  • Only topic hierarchy text is kept: notes, labels, attachments, images, relationship lines, boundaries, and styles are all dropped.
  • Under the current mapping rule, topics at level 4 and deeper always become list items and cannot be restored to headings.
  • Files over 20 MiB or encrypted/damaged .xmind files cannot be parsed.
  • The workspace editor caps at 30,000 characters — trim large maps before loading.

FAQ

Is my file uploaded during conversion?

No. Parsing and conversion run entirely in your browser; the file is never sent to any server. Note that if you later hand the result to AI tools for refinement, that text is sent to the model service.

Are XMind Zen and XMind 8 both supported?

Yes, both storage formats (JSON and XML) are recognized; unreadable files get a clear error message.

Do notes and attachments come across?

No. Markdown keeps only the topic hierarchy — notes, attachments, markers, relationship lines, and styling are lost. This is not a lossless conversion.

What about multi-sheet files?

If the file contains several sheets, a dropdown lets you switch between them; each sheet is converted and exported separately.
